It is the third-most populous county in California and the sixth-most populous in the United States, with a population larger than 27 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Orange County spans approximately 948 square miles (2,460 km²). Of this area, about 791 square miles (2,050 km²) is land, while the remaining 157 square miles (410 km²) is water, making up around 16.6% of the county's total area. This positions Orange County as one of the smaller counties in Southern California, though it still offers a diverse range of environments and features.
The county enjoys a relatively mild climate due to its moderate size, with average annual temperatures typically ranging from 60 °F (16 °C) to 75 °F (24 °C). Coastal areas experience milder temperatures and more consistent weather, while inland regions can experience greater temperature variations.
Orange County is bordered by Los Angeles County to the northwest, San Bernardino County to the north, Riverside County to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest.
